CHAPTER SIX

The night was restless, Mike waking up several times parched or needing to go to the toilet. Every time, though, he’d open his eyes to find himself tangled with Jason, his warmth competing with the summer air.

He groaned awake for the last time when he felt Jason get out of bed.

Jason brushed Mike’s hair away from his face. “Gonna make some coffee and food,” he murmured.

“Help?”

“No, you’re good. How’s the hangover?”

“Urgh.”

Jason laughed. “I’ll bring you some water and Advil.”

“Thanks.”

He dozed for a little while after taking the painkillers, last night taking over him in inches—the beers, the mud, the kiss.

“Fuck.” He pressed his face against his pillow, wondering if he could suffocate.

He’d been so fucking pathetic—the kiss, the way he’d practically begged Jason to stay over. And now Jason was out there making him breakfast.

Honestly…what the fuck?

Mike dragged himself to the bathroom, cleaning up a little before heading out.

Jason had already finished with breakfast—sunny-side-up eggs, toast, and bacon. How he’d had the energy for all of that, Mike really didn’t understand.

Jason smiled a little as Mike made it to the kitchen island. “Hey.”

“Hey. Thanks for breakfast. Looks good.”

“Pot of coffee, too.”

“Thanks.”

They ate in silence, the dogs somewhere outside, no doubt getting into some kind of trouble.

The quiet between them was unbearable, but now that the alcohol was out of his system, Mike had shut down again.

“So,” Jason finally said. “Last night.”

Mike sat back, looking at Jason, steeling his expression. “Yeah.”

“You, uhm. Was that kiss, like…because you were drunk? Or…”

There was no way Mike would have kissed him if he hadn’t been drunk, but Mike knew what Jason was asking.

Had Mike meant it?

Mike tried to say something. To admit how much he liked Jason. How Jason made him feel. But everything was closed off, the words crammed at the base of his throat, choking him.

Jason looked at him for a long time before he shook his head. “Okay. Well. I mean, you probably know that I’m totally, like…gone for you.”

Mike tried to make his brain work. “You…what?”

Jason rolled his eyes, cheeks flushed. “Come on. I’ve been so fucking obvious—I thought that’s why you freaked out when I told you I was bi, honestly.”

Mike gaped for a moment. “No.”

“Well. Okay, shit, well…now you know. I’m a dumbass.”

“You like me?”

Jason side-eyed him. “Yeah. Sorry if that’s…a lot. I know you don’t—I mean, I guess you kissed me yesterday, so I’m a little confused, but I know you’re working through a lot of stuff, and I don’t wanna get in the way of that.”

Mike shook his head slightly. “I feel that way too. I…like you, or whatever.” It was easier to say now that Jason looked like that, so uncertain and scared. His own heart was pounding so hard he could hardly hear himself think.

Jason frowned, doubt all over his face. “Mike…I’m not gonna say you’re confused, because that’s super condescending, but. I’m the first out queer person you’ve had, like, consistent contact with. Don’t you think that’s the reason why—”

“No. That’s ridiculous. I’m not a duck, Jason.
